Microsuction ear wax removal is a safe and effective method used to remove excess or impacted ear wax from the ear canal. Unlike traditional ear syringing, which uses water to flush out ear wax, microsuction is a dry technique that involves the use of a specialised device known as a microsuction pump and a thin, sterile suction wand.

Here's how the process typically works:

  1. Examination: A qualified audiologist or ear care specialist will begin by examining your ear using an otoscope or a microscope. This examination helps to determine the location and condition of the earwax.
  2. Microsuction: Once the earwax is assessed, the specialist will use the microsuction pump to gently and precisely remove the wax. The device generates a controlled suction that safely suctions out the earwax from the ear canal. The process is performed under direct vision using a magnifying lens, ensuring accuracy and minimizing any risk of injury to the ear.
  3. Immediate Relief: Microsuction is generally well-tolerated by patients, and the relief from any discomfort or hearing impairment is often immediate.

The advantages of microsuction ear wax removal include:

  • It's a dry and gentle procedure, making it suitable for individuals with ear sensitivities.
  • It allows for precise and controlled removal, reducing the risk of ear injury.
  • It's effective in removing both soft and hard earwax.
  • The procedure can be done relatively quickly, typically in a matter of minutes.

Microsuction is often preferred over ear syringing or irrigation, as it is a more controlled and less invasive method for ear wax removal. It's also suitable for a wider range of patients, including those with ear tubes or other ear conditions. It is essential to have this procedure performed by a trained and qualified professional to ensure safety and effectiveness.

While Microsuction ear wax removal is generally considered a safe and effective procedure when performed by a qualified and experienced professional, there are some, although rare but potential risks and considerations to be aware of:

  1. Discomfort or Pain: Some individuals may experience mild discomfort during the procedure. This is typically due to the suction process and the movement of the suction wand within the ear canal. However, this discomfort is usually temporary and subsides once the procedure is complete.
  2. Infection: In very rare cases, there is a risk of infection if the ear canal is damaged during the procedure or if the equipment used is not properly sterilised. This risk is minimised when the procedure is performed by a trained and experienced practitioner using sterile equipment.
  3. Tinnitus or Dizziness: Some individuals may experience temporary tinnitus (ringing in the ears) or dizziness following the procedure. These symptoms usually resolve on their own, but it's essential to inform your audiologist or ear care specialist if you experience persistent issues.
  4. Perforation of the Eardrum: Although it's extremely rare, there is a risk of eardrum perforation if the suction wand inadvertently comes into contact with the eardrum. Proper training, experience, and the use of visualization tools like microscopes help reduce this risk.
  5. Existing Ear Conditions: Individuals with certain pre-existing ear conditions, such as a perforated eardrum or ear infections, MAY not be suitable candidates for microsuction. It's crucial for the audiologist to conduct a thorough examination before proceeding.
  6. Hearing Changes: In some cases, there may be temporary changes in hearing immediately following the procedure. This is often due to the removal of the earwax, and hearing should return to normal once the ear has had time to adjust.

It's important to choose a qualified and experienced audiologist or ear care specialist such as Maidstone Ear Wax Removal to perform the procedure. We will conduct a thorough assessment of your ear condition and carefully perform the procedure to minimise potential risks. If you experience any unusual or persistent symptoms following the procedure, it's essential to contact us for further evaluation and guidance.

In many cases, it's recommended to soften the earwax before undergoing microsuction ear wax removal, as softened wax is typically easier and safer to remove. Softening the earwax helps to make the removal process more comfortable and reduces the risk of injury or discomfort during the procedure. Here's how you can soften earwax:

Position your head at a 90 degree angle or better, lay on your side as horizontal as you can.

Using medical grade olive oil which can be found at any local pharmacy, insert 3-4 drops/sprays in to the affected ear canal. You can help the procedure by gently pinching the top side of your ear and moving it in a circular motion, this helps to open the canal and encourages the drops to enter deeper in to the canal. let the drops take affect for around 4-5 minutes each side, wiping away any excess.

Do NOT insert cotton wool/tissue etc as this will absorb the drops and stop it from being absorbed in to the wax therefore inhibiting the softeneing of it.

*If you experience any new symptoms or discomfort, please contact us for advice.
